Generalized transformation optics of linear materials

چکیده
We continue the development of a manifestly four-dimensional, completely covariant, approach to transformation optics in linear dielectric materials begun in a previous paper. This approach, which generalizes the Plebanski based approach, is systematically applicable for all transformations and all general linear materials. Importantly, it enables useful applications such as arbitrary relative motion, transformations from arbitrary non-vacuum initial dielectric media, and arbitrary space–times. This approach is demonstrated for a resulting material that moves with uniform linear velocity, and in particular for a moving cloak. The inverse problem of this covariant approach is shown to generalize Gordon’s ‘optical metric’.

Hiding an elephant into a matchbox with transformation optics
Based on transformation optics, we propose an illusion device that can make objects look much smaller and different than they actually are. In particular, the device has a capability to hide a large object (like an elephant) into a small one (like a matchbox). Compared to previous proposals for illusion devices, there is no requirement for negative refractive index or for spee...

In this paper various extensions of the design strategy of transformation media are proposed. We show that it is possible to assign different transformed spaces to the field strength tensor (electric field and magnetic induction) and to the excitation tensor (displacement field and magnetic field), resp. In this way, several limitations of standard transformation media can be overcome. In parti...
متن کاملPolarimetric imaging of crystals.
Classical crystal optics has recently undergone a renaissance as developments in optical microscopy and polarimetry, enabled in part by sensitive imaging CCD cameras and personal computers, now permit the analytical separation of various optical effects that are otherwise convolved in polarized light micrographs. In this tutorial review, we review recent developments in the measurement of the p...
متن کاملExtension of the generalized multipole technique to three-dimensional anisotropic scatterers.
New expansions are derived for the simulation of three-dimensional anisotropic scatterers with the generalized multipole technique (GMT). This extension of the GMT makes possible the investigation of subtle phenomena such as the interaction of light with realistic crystals or magneto-optic materials.
